Learning how to find yourself isn’t easy. For many of us, the answer doesn’t come quickly. Sometimes it hits in our 20s when we realize we’re not living for ourselves. Sometimes it’s in our 40s or 50s when we stop and notice the gap between what we expected life to look like and what it actually became. And sometimes, it comes much later, after loss, heartbreak, or disappointment shakes us awake.
That’s when the real work begins. It’s not a quick fix. It’s not about one breakthrough moment that suddenly makes everything clear. It’s a process, a personal growth journey that unfolds over time.
For me, this search became part of my larger self-discovery journey. This required solitude, honesty, forgiveness, and the courage to show up as myself. And it’s one we all must take, in our own way.
Why do We Lose Ourselves
So why do we lose ourselves in the first place? For many, it begins in childhood. Upbringing plays a powerful role. If you were raised in an environment where love felt conditional, or where your worth was measured by performance, you quickly learn to wear masks. Add to that the sting of bullying or the weight of negative words spoken over your life, and those lies can echo for decades.
In my own story, I carried childhood traumas and the fear of disapproval into adulthood, and it left me chasing validation from people who never truly cared. Today, social media amplifies the problem, constantly comparing us to curated versions of other people’s lives, while judgment and consumerism tell us we’re not enough unless we buy, achieve, or look a certain way. No wonder so many of us wake up one day wondering, Who am I, really?
Finding Yourself
Finding yourself is not about chasing a new version of who you should be. It’s about uncovering the person you’ve always been beneath the weight of expectations, obligations, and past wounds. It starts with slowing down, asking yourself hard questions, and listening to the answers without judgment. Journaling, meditation, and spending quiet time in nature can help you tune out distractions and reconnect with your inner voice.
You may also need to experiment:
Try new hobbies
Explore different environments
Revisit old passions to see what feels authentic
Forgive yourself
Most importantly give yourself permission to grow and change. Finding yourself is not a onetime event. It is a Lifelong journey of self discovery and self acceptance
1. Make Space for Solitude
The world is noisy. Everyone has an opinion about who you should be, what you should want, and how you should live. Between family, friends, work, and social media, it’s easy to get lost in the noise.
But here’s the truth: you can’t find yourself if you never hear your own voice.
That’s why solitude is so important. Time alone may feel uncomfortable at first, silence can be intimidating when you’re used to filling it with distractions. But solitude is where honesty lives. When you sit with yourself, you begin reconnecting with yourself in ways that reveal what you’ve been hiding, avoiding, or forgetting.
Try simple practices: journaling in the morning, taking a quiet walk, sitting with a cup of tea without reaching for your phone. Solitude isn’t about loneliness. It’s about giving yourself space to breathe and listen.
2. Personal Growth
Growth begins when you get honest with yourself. That means asking questions you might not want the answers to.
What am I running from?
Why do I feel unworthy of love?
Whose approval am I still chasing?
What do I believe about myself that might not even be true?
These questions are not comfortable. But they are necessary. Because until you face the lies you’ve believed about yourself, you’ll keep living under them.
Answering them is the first step in discovering your true self. It’s peeling back the layers of who you’ve been told to be and daring to look at who you really are.
3. Look Back Without Staying Stuck
For many of us, the past is full of wounds. Childhood trauma, failed relationships, disappointments, missed opportunities, these things leave scars.
But you cannot fully move forward without understanding where you’ve been. The past holds clues about what shaped you, what broke you, and what still needs healing.
That doesn’t mean living in regret. It means revisiting your past gently, with compassion. Ask yourself: What did I need back then that I didn’t get? What strengths carried me through that I forgot about? What patterns do I see that I don’t want to repeat?
This reflection is key to finding yourself again after seasons of pain or loss. It’s not about staying stuck there, it’s about gathering wisdom to move forward stronger.
4. Take Off the Masks
We all wear masks. We pretend to be stronger than we feel. We say yes when we want to say no. We play roles to fit in, to be loved, to avoid rejection.
But masks are heavy. The longer you wear them, the harder it is to remember who you really are underneath.
Learning how to find yourself means daring to take the masks off. It means showing up as yourself, flaws and all. You may lose some people when you do, but the ones who remain will love you for who you are, not who you pretended to be.
This is where healing and self acceptance begin. Not when you become perfect, but when you accept that you are already worthy just as you are.
5. Redefine Success
So many of us get trapped in society’s version of success: money, career titles, a house, marriage, children, retirement savings. There’s nothing wrong with those things, but they don’t define your worth.
If you’ve been chasing someone else’s dream, it’s no wonder you feel lost. Part of discovering your true self is deciding what success looks like for you.
For some, success may mean peace of mind. For others, it’s freedom, creativity, or meaningful relationships. For me, it became resilience, kindness, and the ability to stand back up after life knocked me down.
When you redefine success, you stop measuring your life by external standards and start living in alignment with your own values.
6. Learn to Say No Without Guilt
For years, I said yes to things I didn’t want, to people who drained me, to situations that left me empty. Why? Because I was terrified that saying no meant I wasn’t good enough or worthy of love.
But every yes to something that harms you is a no to yourself. And every no to chaos, drama, or unnecessary demands is a yes to your peace.
Saying no is not selfish, it’s survival. It’s one of the most practical steps in any personal growth journey. It creates boundaries, and boundaries protect the space where your true self can thrive.
7. Celebrate the Small Joys
When you strip away the masks and expectations, something amazing happens: you begin to notice joy in the simplest places.
The warmth of the sun on your face. The first sip of tea in the morning. A journal entry where your words flow honestly. A smile in the mirror that feels real.
Finding yourself isn’t always about dramatic transformations. Often, it’s about rediscovering these little sparks of happiness that remind you, this is me, alive and present.
These simple joys are signs that you’re reconnecting with yourself.
8. Accept That It’s Ongoing
Here’s the truth nobody tells you: there is no finish line. You don’t “find yourself” once and for all. Life will keep shifting, circumstances will change, and you’ll keep growing.
But when you commit to this work, you stop fearing the unknown. You accept that healing and self-acceptance are lifelong practices.
Learning how to find yourself is not about arriving, it’s about walking the path with courage.
How Do You Find Yourself ?
Maybe you’re 25. Maybe you’re 50. Maybe you’re 70. It doesn’t matter. If you feel lost, it’s not the end of the story. It’s the beginning of a new chapter.
This is what starting over in life looks like, not erasing your past, but carrying its lessons forward while daring to create something new.
Finding yourself isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming the person you were always meant to be.
So, how do you find yourself? You begin. You listen. You forgive. You grow.
And when life knocks you down or you feel lost again, you return to the work of finding yourself again. That’s the beauty of this personal growth journey: it’s never too late, and it’s never really over.
This is part of the greater self-discovery journey, one step of many on the road back to you.

This birthday marks one year since I returned home to Jamaica with nothing but faith, determination, and the will to begin again. Looking back now, I see how that year reshaped me in ways I never expected.
Finding myself after 50 has been less about self discovery and more about remembering the woman I’ve always been. The spirit I maintain in spite of the expectations, heartbreaks, and losses that once tried to erase me. Life after fifty brings both freedom and fear: the freedom to finally live on your own terms, and the fear of starting over when everything familiar has fallen away.
In this reflection, I share seven powerful lessons I’ve learned in the year since coming home. The lessons about strength, self forgiveness, worth, and the kind of healing that only comes when life strips you down to what truly matters. These lessons didn’t come easy, but they taught me that rebirth at any age is possible when you choose grace over guilt and courage over comfort.
Each one was born from experience, not theory or wishful thinking, but the hard, soul-deep work of rebuilding from nothing. My first year back in Jamaica tested everything I thought I knew about myself. But it reshaped my focus and reminded me that starting over can also mean coming home to yourself.
The Truth About Starting Over After 50
When I talk about finding myself after 50, I don’t mean through quiet meditation or a perfect plan. I mean finding the courage to start again after life stripped me down to nothing.
When I landed back in Jamaica, after being turned back from Cancun, I had no money, no home, and no clear idea how I would rebuild. My high school batchmates, kind, generous souls, Go XLCR Class of 1979, stepped in to help me rent a small room and even contributed toward my cataract surgery. For a while, things looked hopeful. I began sewing again, creating pieces that reminded me I still had something to offer the world.
But Jamaica is expensive, and no matter how hard I worked, my income couldn’t keep up. Eventually, I had to give up my room and move in with my ex, an elderly man I agreed to help care for in exchange for shelter.
At first, I slept in his bed because there was nowhere else. But when his touch began to cross boundaries I couldn’t accept, I moved to the floor. That choice wasn’t about comfort, it was about reclaiming control over my body and peace over my spirit.
When I tried to explain my pain, he told me to “get over it,” insisting that because we’d once shared a life, his touch couldn’t be wrong. But trauma doesn’t disappear because someone else is uncomfortable with it.
So I stayed on the floor, not out of weakness, but out of self-protection. Each night became a quiet act of defiance, a promise to myself that even if I had to rebuild from the ground up, I would do it on my own terms.
And that’s exactly what finding myself after 50 has meant: learning to stand firm in my truth, even when standing means sleeping on the floor.
This isn’t the glossy kind of rebirth people post online. It’s raw, humbling, and rooted in grace. On my sixty-third birthday, I realized I wasn’t just celebrating another year; I was celebrating survival.
1. You Can Begin Again at Any Age
People say life slows down after fifty, but I’ve found that’s when it truly begins.
When I came back from Cancun, I thought my story was over. Instead, it was being rewritten. Beginning again doesn’t mean starting from scratch. It means starting from experience.
Every disappointment, heartbreak, and small victory has shaped me into the woman I am today. So if you’re over fifty and wondering if it’s too late to chase your dream, it’s not. You’re right on time.
4. Rediscovering Yourself
We spend so much of our lives collecting titles like mother, partner, caregiver, survivor, that we forget who we were before the world told us who to be.
When everything fell apart, I had no choice but to stop and think. I had no plans, no real options, and fear had me frozen.
But in that quiet space, I started to face myself. That’s when I realized the only thing standing in my way was me. When life gets still, it shows you what all the noise was hiding.
3. Healing Isn’t a Straight Line
Healing after fifty isn’t about fixing yourself. It’s about forgiving yourself. Some days you feel strong and ready. Other days you fall apart. Both count as progress.
My strength didn’t come from pushing through. It came from resting when I needed to and letting the hurt breathe until it lost its power. Healing moves like the sea, sometimes calm, sometimes rough, but it always carries you somewhere new.
4. The Power of Self Forgiveness
There was a time I carried my past like a heavy bag I couldn’t put down. Every regret, every wrong turn, lived in my mind rent-free. I thought strength meant never looking back, but real strength came when I learned to face those memories with compassion.
Forgiving myself wasn’t easy. It meant admitting where I fell short, but also accepting that I did the best I could with what I knew at the time. Self-forgiveness isn’t about erasing mistakes. It’s about releasing the shame that keeps you stuck.
The woman I am today still has her scars, but she doesn’t punish herself for them anymore. She’s learned that peace begins when you stop fighting your past. Every time I choose understanding over guilt, I get a little closer to freedom.
5. Starting Over After 50 Means Unlearning
Finding myself after fifty wasn’t about adding more. It was about releasing what no longer fit.
I had to unlearn the idea that my value depended on how much I gave or how hard I worked.
Self-discovery at this age feels like peeling away everything false until you meet yourself again — raw, real, and at peace. It’s not about becoming someone new. It’s about coming home to yourself.
6. Personal Growth Happens in Quiet Moments
Personal growth rarely makes a big announcement. It happens in the small choices — choosing peace instead of arguing, saying no without guilt, trusting your gut even when others don’t.
The world measures success by noise. I’ve learned to measure mine by peace. Growth after fifty isn’t about the hustle anymore. It’s about aligning your life with what actually nourishes you.
7. Give Yourself Grace
What does this mean to me? Giving myself grace means giving myself permission to forgive. It allows me to accept that it’s okay to make mistakes because I can always wipe the slate clean and start again.
Grace reminds me to put down guilt and walk away from it. To embrace my imperfections while still working to grow. To be my own cheerleader when no one else is clapping.
It teaches me to set realistic expectations, to let go of outside pressures and what society says I should be. And most of all, grace allows me to rest without guilt, knowing that doing my best is enough.
Finding Myself After 50: The Journey Continues
As I step into this new year, I know finding myself after 50 isn’t a one-time revelation. It’s a rhythm, a dance between who I was and who I’m still becoming.
Each day teaches me another layer of grace. Each mistake softens me. Each sunrise reminds me that I’ve survived too much to stop now.
If you’re standing at the edge of a new beginning, wondering if you have the strength to try again, let me tell you, you do.
We are Group 7, the ones who made it through the fire and came out glowing.
And as for me, I’m still here, still healing, still finding myself after 50, one quiet act of courage at a time.

Suicide depression and mental health are not abstract issues, they are lived realities for millions of people. Depression is not just a passing sadness that fades in a few days. According to the World Health Organization, more than 280 million people worldwide live with depression, making it one of the leading causes of disability. It drains energy, robs joy, and often convinces those who suffer that life will never get better. Left untreated, it can become unbearable.
Suicide is the act of intentionally ending one’s life, but behind the act there is almost always a deeper story. There is often a story of pain that feels endless, invisible, and impossible to carry. Every year, more than 700,000 people die by suicide across the world. For each one, there are many more attempts, many more silent cries for help that never make the headlines. It is now the fourth leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29, but it is not confined to any age. It reaches into every generation, every class, every culture.
And then there is mental health itself, which is so often misunderstood. Too many people think of mental health as simply the absence of mental illness, but it is far more than that. It is the way we think, the way we feel, and the way we cope with the demands of life. Just as our physical bodies need care, so too do our minds. When mental health is neglected, depression and suicidal thoughts can quickly follow.
Heaviest burdens are often carried in secret.
Cultural Stigma
Across black cultures, and especially here in Jamaica, the conversation around suicide depression and mental health has long been clouded by stigma. People will say, “Pray about it,” or dismiss it as “just stress.” In our communities, seeking therapy is often seen as weakness, or something “mad people” do. Because of that, many suffer in silence, hiding their struggles behind laughter, work, or drink.
Yet even within that silence, we have always reached for ways to cope. Bush teas like Fever Grass to calm the nerves, Soursop Leaf for restless nights, and Vervain to quiet the mind. Herbal baths and reasonings with elders have long been medicine for the spirit. These traditions remind us that we’ve always known the mind needs care.
But the truth is this: caring for our mental health is not weakness . It’s just as important as caring for our bodies, and ignoring it doesn’t make the pain go away; it only pushes it deeper. The more we open the conversation, the more we break those chains of shame and silence.
Why They’re Connected
There is a clear and painful link between suicide depression and mental health. Globally, more than 720,000 people die by suicide every year, and 73% of those deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries (WHO). Jamaica is part of this global reality, and while our official numbers may look smaller, the pain behind them is just as real.
Depression changes the way a person sees themselves and the world. It shrinks possibilities down to a single dark option — escape. For someone trapped in that space, suicide feels less like a desire to die and more like a desperate need to stop hurting. That is why we cannot separate the conversation about depression from the conversation about suicide. They are two sides of the same coin.
The Causes of Suicide Depression and Mental Health
One of the greatest misunderstandings about suicide and depression is the belief that there must be a single cause. People say things like, “But she had everything — why would she do that?” or “He seemed fine yesterday.” The truth is never that simple.
Suicide and depression are almost always the result of a mix of factors. Biological vulnerabilities, like brain chemistry or family history, play a role. Psychological struggles, like unresolved trauma, bullying, or deep-seated shame, add another layer. And then there are social pressures, poverty, failed relationships, work stress, discrimination, or even the silent comparisons we make scrolling through social media. Cultural and religious influences can help some people heal, but for others, they add shame that silences.
Every story is different. Every struggle is personal. But the common thread is pain, and the belief that the pain will never end. Suicide depression and mental health struggles are more common than most people admit. For many, it’s something whispered in secret, hidden behind smiles, or silenced by shame.
Recently, I was shaken by the story of Tyra Spaulding, a former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant who had been open about her depression. When I heard her words, it was like she reached inside me. I knew that feeling, the hopelessness, the exhaustion, the sense that you are never enough. That was me from a young age.
For as long as I can remember, I battled suicidal thoughts. My experiences of molestation by an adult family member, the dismissal and inaction upon discovery, being forced to continue living with him and to address him as “father” , even though he was my grandfather. Combined with the bullying of my siblings, the merciless beatings from my mother, and the constant comparisons, disapproval, and dismissal of my dreams, it wore me down to such a low point that I felt I didn’t belong and did not deserve to occupy a place on earth. My most-asked question was: If she didn’t want me, why did she give birth to me?
And so when I hear of someone else, a young woman, a child, a man at the end of his rope, I don’t see a headline. I feel the ache. I understand the silent battle.
Which leaves me asking, not as an outsider, but as someone who’s been there: Why is this happening to so many? Why are we losing lives at such alarming rates, even among children?
This is not an easy topic, but it is one we must talk about. Silence is part of the problem.
Mental Health Issues are a Worldwide Phenomenon
Failed Relationships and Murder Suicide
One of the greatest triggers for despair is the collapse of relationships. Failed marriages, betrayals, and even broken friendships can shatter a person’s sense of self-worth.
I know what it feels like to be left and to wonder, Was I not enough? That rejection can cut deeper than people realize. When love or companionship disappears, it can confirm the darkest inner voices, that you’re unlovable, unwanted, unworthy.
Relationships are meant to sustain us, but when they fail, the emptiness left behind can drive people toward dangerous places.
Parental Pressure and Teenage Suicide
Another heavy road that leads here is parental pressure, mental heath and teenage suicide.
So many children, and adults, carry the weight of expectations that feel impossible. Parents want success for their kids, but sometimes their demands crush instead of inspire. “Be the top student. Make us proud. Don’t bring shame on this family.”
I’ve seen people including myself chase careers, degrees, or lifestyles they didn’t even want, just to please their parents. And when they can’t measure up, the shame is unbearable. That pressure builds cracks in a person’s spirit, and suicidal thoughts often creep in through those cracks.
The most heartbreaking rise we’re seeing is suicide among teens and preteens. Children as young as ten are carrying burdens no child should.
They live in a world that never turns off. Academic stress, bullying that follows them home through their phones, identity struggles, and the relentless comparison of social media. At an age when they should be exploring life and joy, many are questioning whether life is worth living at all.
It terrifies me that so many young people are quietly fighting these battles while the adults around them don’t even see the signs.
Religious Conflict and Mental Health
Faith can be a source of hope, but it can also become a source of shame when mental health struggles are dismissed as sin.
I grew up in a religious background. The values I learned stayed with me, but so did the struggles. Too often, people wrestling with depression are told to “pray harder,” “rebuke the devil,” or “have more faith.”
Yes, prayer and faith can sustain us. But when religion becomes judgment instead of compassion, it isolates people even more. Religious conflict and mental health struggles often go hand in hand, and this silence within faith communities is costing lives.
Praying alone is not a sufficient solution for mental health issues
Rising Suicide Rates Worldwide
Globally, we are seeing rising suicide rates worldwide. It’s not one single cause, it’s layers of modern life piling up.
The cost of living, job insecurity, and economic instability. Social isolation, especially after the pandemic. Social media’s endless highlight reels. And the silence and stigma that stop people from seeking help.
We live in a pressure cooker, and too many are reaching a breaking point.
Recognizing the Signs
One of the hardest things about suicide, depression, and mental health struggles is that they often hide in plain sight. People learn to wear masks so well that their pain goes unnoticed, until it’s too late. Still, there are signs we can look out for, both in ourselves and in those we love:
Withdrawal and pulling away from friends, family, or activities they once enjoyed.
Changes in sleep or appetite. Sleepin too much or too little, sudden weight loss or gain.
Expressions of hopelessness, saying things like “What’s the point?” or “I can’t do this anymore.”
Risky behaviors such as increased drinking, drug use, or reckless decisions.
Giving away possessions. Sometimes this a quiet way of preparing to say goodbye.
Sudden calm after despair. This a possible sign that someone has made a final decision.
If you notice these signs in someone, don’t dismiss them. Start the conversation. Listen without judgment. Sometimes the smallest act of care, a call, a question, or a hug can interrupt the spiral and remind someone they’re not alone.
Compassion Over Judgment
And this is what I need to say loud and clear: judgment kills.
People often minimize what they don’t understand. They say, “I’d never do that,” or “life can’t be that bad,” or “they just need to pray.” But unless you’ve walked in someone else’s shoes, you don’t know the weight they carry.
We don’t need more shame. We need compassion. A listening ear instead of a lecture. A safe space instead of silence.
What Helps (Without Pretending It’s Easy)
Healing is not neat or simple. But here are steps that matter:
Naming the struggle: Breaking the silence weakens shame.
Safe communities: Churches, families, and groups that lead with compassion, not judgment.
Daily practices: Journaling, a walk, a deep breath — small acts matter.
Hope in pieces: Sometimes hope comes in small moments, and that’s enough to keep going.
Lets journey together to triumph over mental heath and depression
The Silent Battle of Suicide Depression and Mental Health
One of the most dangerous myths is that we can tell who is struggling just by looking.
How many times have you heard, after someone passes, “But they looked so happy,” or “I just saw them yesterday”? I know that mask well, smiling in public while falling apart inside. Pretending to be strong because I was terrified of being judged weak.
That’s the silent battle of suicide depression and mental health. What you see on the outside isn’t always what’s happening inside.
So why does this happen? Because life is heavy. Because people are human. Because pain is real, and silence makes it worse. And because for too long, suicide depression and mental health have been hidden behind closed doors instead of spoken about openly.
But the more we talk about it, the less power shame has. Every conversation chips away at the silence. Every story shared can remind someone that they are not broken, they are not weak, and they are not alone.
If you’ve ever felt like giving up, please know this: your life matters. You are not your pain. You are not your past. And you don’t have to carry it by yourself. There is help. There is hope. And there is healing, one honest conversation at a time.

You are not alone. Let’s inhale hope, exhale heaviness, and keep going — one step at a time.
So you’re over 50, and you think you’ve got it all together, but do you really? Do you know who you are? Well, me neither. I’m making progress on my self discovery journey, but I’m still learning. I had to dig deep inside to check the negative thoughts I had about myself in order to uncover the positives buried deep within. The ones I never noticed. The ones so obscured by self-hatred and disgust that I forgot they even existed.
Looking Back
Looking back at memories of who I was as a child, I remembered that walking the streets in my community everyone called me “Smiling Face.” If I saw a child walking down the road crying, I would stop them to find out what was wrong and do what I could to help, even though I was a child myself. I made friends easily wherever I went. I played the lead role of Mary in the Christmas play at church and would be called upon to present bouquets to the Prime Minister when he visited the area.
I was a very happy child, until the trauma started.
I was inappropriately handled by an adult male family member. I was bullied by my three cousins and one sister. I was beaten mercilessly by my mom for things I did and didn’t do. And that caused me to change in ways that would impact me not only in childhood but straight into adulthood.
My siblings would all gang up on me and mercilessly tickle me until I peed myself. They found it funny. Whenever I expressed a thought or an opinion, it was shot down, laughed at, or ridiculed. My mom would not only beat me for everything under the sun, dropping or chipping a mug, breaking a glass, spilling something, she constantly compared me to my sister. “Why can’t you be more like her?” was the refrain I heard at school, at church, and at home.
(For more on my experience with my male family member, join me on Patreon where I can speak freely about subjects frowned upon on YouTube. Link in description.)
Losing Myself
As a result, I moved from being a smiling, happy-faced child to one filled with anger and resentment, fighting at home, school, and church. To take away my siblings’ pleasure in making me laugh, I taught myself not to laugh. That worked. So I figured maybe I could also stop my mother’s constant beatings if I trained myself not to cry. That didn’t work, it only made the punishments worse. But by then, I was numb.
By age ten, I no longer laughed nor cried. The constant comparison and rejection wore me down so much that I made a drastic shift in who I was. I no longer recognized myself.
Adulthood Without Direction
After high school, my dreams were brutally dismissed. I wanted to go to Edna Manley College to study drama. My mother ridiculed me: “A wha yu a go do with that when you leave?”
So I pivoted and said I would become a nurse. The ridicule got worse: “You can’t even stand the sight of blood.”
I tried teaching. That lasted less than a year. I became a public health inspector, but my supervisor, the office drunk, told me plainly that unless I gave in to him, I’d be fired. I quit after two years.
From then on, I drifted from job to job with no direction or purpose. I entered adulthood broken and lost.
During that time, I went through several traumatic experiences (which I share in detail on Patreon). One of the biggest was a car accident where I suffered a skull fracture, was unconscious for seven days, and lived with amnesia for a while. But that’s another story.
The Road Back To You
As a child my expectations were that by the age of 50 I would own my home, have a fully functional, happy family, and a healthy retirement plan while I looked forward to retiring. But guess what? The only thing I can check off that list is the wonderful children I have. Outside of that, I’m technically homeless, with a couple of empty bank accounts, almost no friends to speak of, and very happily single.
But in this period of isolation and solitude, I had to face myself, and this started my self discovery journey of figuring out who the heck I am. For all intents and purposes, society dictates that by the time we’ve made it to this point, we should have this in the bag. We should be able to answer the question of do you know who you are with confidence. But how many of us are able to?
Reinventing Yourself
For me, many of the years leading up to now were framed by my childhood traumas, and yes, there were several, followed by the ones I experienced in adulthood. I was sensitive to criticism. I thought that if people stopped or started talking when I entered or left a space, they were talking about me.
Disapproval terrified me, to the point I became a people pleaser on one hand, but some of the rebellion and disregard for authority from my childhood still remained.
I carried the values of a religious upbringing, but I also adopted habits that clashed with them: cursing like a truck driver, drinking heavily, smoking a pack a day, and using intimacy as a tool of control. The two sides of me battled constantly, leaving me feeling like multiple people lived inside one body.
This is what it felt like to lose myself. And this is why I needed to walk the road back to me, to the self I had long forgotten. This is where my self discovery journey started.
Starting Over in Life After 50
As I approached my 60s, after having survived all these catastrophic events and traumas, I cut myself off from relationships and retreated inward. And it was there I met me.
At my IDGAF juncture, I began to care less about what people thought of me and whether they liked me or not. I learned it was okay to distance myself from people who disrupted my peace. I discovered self-awareness and began to practice self-love.
Instead of groaning with disgust when I looked in the mirror, I began to compliment myself. I practiced smiling again. I forgave myself for youthful mistakes and stopped blaming myself for what I couldn’t control. That shift changed my whole outlook.
This was the beginning of reinventing myself, not becoming someone else, but embracing the person I had always been.
What do you see when you look in the mirror?
Who Am I ?
I am a very resilient woman.
After having been knocked down in life so many times, I’ve always found a way to get back up.
I am a positive person.
Somewhere along the line, I picked up the phrase every cloud has a silver lining. It kind of became my mantra. Don’t get me wrong, I do feel disappointed, but I don’t let it get me down for too long. I try to look for the silver lining of every situation. I ask: Is there something that I need to learn through this experience? How can I make this benefit me? After years of doing that, it has become ingrained in the fiber of my being.
I’m still a caregiver.
That’s one thing they never stole from me. I care about people, even though I may not necessarily like them, and I try to help wherever I can.
I am kind.
I have been known to give away the last of what I have, even if I have no idea of how I’m going to replace it.
I am resourceful.
I look for ways to solve problems. This has always helped me rise, even after being knocked over and stomped into the ground.
IDGAF.
This is one of the best things that has happened to me. It took a long time, but I am now at the point where people’s opinions of me no longer matter. I am me, take it or leave it.
What do I see when I look in the mirror?
When I look in the mirror, I see a beautiful human being who now recognizes her worth as well as her faults and accepts them. I see strength in the wrinkles, wisdom in the scars, and a spirit that refuses to stay broken. While I now appreciate the person I have grown into, I also recognize there’s still room to grow, and that’s okay. Growth is a lifelong process.
I am a hard worker.
I’ve never been afraid to roll up my sleeves and do what needs to be done. Even when life knocked me down, I kept pushing, kept building, and kept finding a way forward. Work has always been my anchor. It gives me purpose, strength, and a reason to keep going, no matter how rough the road has been.
I don’t believe in giving up.
Life has tested me more times than I can count, but giving up was never an option. I may pause, stumble, or even break for a while, but I always get back up. To me, you’ve only failed when you’ve stopped trying, and I’m still here, still standing, still grinding, still fighting.
I accept myself.
I am comfortable with who I am, where I’m at, and where I need to be. I don’t measure my success by my bank balance. It is measured by the hurdles I’ve overcome, my resilience and hard work, my core strength, and the values I still hold dear.
So Do You Know Who you Are?
Many of us don’t realize how closely our self discovery journey is tied to our mental health. When you don’t know who you are, it’s easy to get lost in anxiety, people-pleasing, or even depression. This is because you’re constantly chasing approval instead of finding peace within yourself. But the more you begin to accept who you are, the strengths, the flaws, the whole picture, the lighter the mental load becomes.
If you’re over 50, or at any stage or age, don’t worry if you don’t know who you are yet. It’s never too late for starting over in life. That’s what starting over in life really means, acknowledging your past, embracing your present, reinventing yourself and courageously stepping into your future.
A self discovery journey doesn’t erase life’s problems, but it gives you the tools to face them with resilience, clarity, and balance. For me, learning to embrace myself has been just as important for my mental well-being as any other form of healing. I’m still a work in progress, and so are you. As long as we’re alive, we’re still learning.
Start Your Own Self Discovery Journey
So here I am at 63. Do I know who I am? Yes and no. I know enough to love myself, forgive myself, and trust my resilience. But I also know my self discovery journey isn’t over. And that’s the beauty of it, this journey never truly ends.
Self discovery doesn’t happen overnight, but step by step, we get closer to who we really are. For centuries, Jamaican bush medicine has been at the forefront of natural and traditional healing. Long before modern pharmaceuticals lined store shelves, there were leaves, roots, barks, and herbs—each with a story, a purpose, and a promise of relief. This ancient practice, known widely as bush medicine, is more than just a remedy; it’s a reflection of Jamaican resilience, wisdom, and the sacred bond between people and nature.
Today, as more people seek alternatives to chemical-based treatments and rediscover the value of natural health, bush medicine is stepping back into the spotlight. And it’s about time.
In this 61 part blog and video series, “Bush Medicine in Jamaica: Nature’s Healing Power,” we’ll explore the remarkable world of Jamaican herbs and traditional healing—uncovering plants that have soothed colds, cured bellyaches, calmed nerves, and boosted vitality for generations.
Whether you’re a curious newcomer, a wellness enthusiast, or someone who grew up hearing your granny say, “Go drink some cerasee!”—this series is for you.
The Roots of Jamaican Bush Medicine
Bush medicine in Jamaica is not a trend—it’s a tradition. Its origins are deeply rooted in the island’s history, shaped by African, indigenous Taino, and European influences.
When enslaved Africans were brought to Jamaica, they brought with them their knowledge of plants and natural healing. Unable to access conventional medical care, they turned to the island’s lush vegetation, adapting their knowledge to new plants they found in the Caribbean. The Maroons—escaped slaves who formed independent communities in the mountains—were especially skilled in bush medicine. Their legacy lives on through the herbal practices passed down to their descendants.
Over time, this practice became woven into everyday life. Every Jamaican household had remedies: a tea for bellyache, a leaf for a cut, a tonic for strength. This was our first pharmacy, our first doctor, and in many ways, our first connection to wellness.

The History and Folklore Behind Jamaican Bush Medicine
Bush medicine in Jamaica is rooted in centuries of survival, resistance, and reverence for nature. It’s more than the plants—it’s the people, the pain, and the power behind them.
The story begins with the Tainos, the island’s first inhabitants, who used herbs for healing long before European contact. They boiled leaves, used poultices, and understood the spiritual significance of certain plants. Sadly, much of their knowledge was lost through colonization, but some of it was passed along to those who came after.
Then came the Africans—kidnapped and enslaved—who carried their herbal knowledge across the Atlantic like buried treasure. Stripped of almost everything, they still held on to what they knew about roots, teas, and the natural world. They encountered new plants on Jamaican soil but adapted quickly, blending their wisdom with what the Tainos and nature had to offer.
The Maroons, Jamaica’s freedom fighters, became legendary for their mastery of the land. Living deep in the mountains, they depended on bush medicine to survive. They knew which herbs healed wounds, which ones gave strength, and which ones could mask scent from colonial dogs during ambushes. To this day, many Maroon communities still rely heavily on traditional herbal medicine.
Folklore plays a strong role too. Certain herbs are not just healing—they’re mystical. Dog blood bush is said to cleanse the womb and remove spiritual blockages. Leaf of life is believed to bring blessings. And then there are the bush baths, which aren’t just for the body—they’re for washing away bad luck or “crosses.”
My grandmother used to say, “Yuh haffi tek bush before yuh tek pill. De bush know yuh body.” In those words lived the core philosophy of bush medicine: trust in the Earth, because the Earth was made for us.
Bush Medicine and Childhood: A Shared Jamaican Experience
For many Jamaicans, bush medicine isn’t just knowledge—it’s a memory, a feeling, a rite of passage. If you grew up in the countryside or even in the bustling corners of Kingston, you likely remember being handed a bitter cup of cerasee tea with the words, “Drink it. It good fi yuh blood.”
I remember my own mother boiling a handful of dried cerasee vines on the stove, the sharp, earthy scent filling the small kitchen. The moment she poured that tea into an enamel cup, I knew what was coming. No sugar. No milk. Just straight bitter bush. I’d take a sip and wince, and she’d laugh and say, “A so yuh know it working!”
Sundays were for church, but Saturdays were for bush baths. We’d gather fresh leaves—guava, leaf of life, fever grass—and boil them in a big pot outside. Then we’d bathe with the mixture to wash away “bad spirits” or bad luck, especially before school exams or a family funeral. Looking back, it wasn’t just a bath—it was a blessing.
Even when I got sick, bush medicine was the first response. Fever? Fever grass tea. Bellyache? Guava leaf. Cough? Leaf of life. We didn’t rush to a clinic—we ran to the backyard.
These practices weren’t just about healing; they were about nurturing. About being seen, cared for, and protected by the knowledge of generations before us.
Science Meets Tradition: The Modern Validation of Bush Medicine
While bush medicine was once dismissed as “old-time remedies,” modern science is beginning to catch up with what Jamaican elders have known for generations. Across the globe, researchers and wellness practitioners are now studying and praising the very herbs that grow in our backyards.
Cerasee (Momordica charantia)
Traditionally used for blood purification and diabetes, studies that show it may help regulate blood sugar levels. The bitter compounds in the plant—called charantin and momordicin—have been shown to have hypoglycemic effects. In countries like India and China, bitter melon (a close cousin) is already used in alternative diabetes treatments.
Soursop Leaves (Annona muricata)
Soursop is widely known in Jamaica as a calming tea, but what’s truly fascinating is its emerging reputation as a cancer-fighting herb. Laboratory studies have found that soursop leaves contain acetogenins, which may help slow the growth of certain types of cancer cells. Though more research is needed, many Jamaicans already use soursop tea for relaxation and immune support.
Moringa (Moringa oleifera)
Called the “miracle tree,” Moringa is loaded with nutrients—calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and E. Modern nutritionists are hailing it as a superfood, and for good reason. The plant is one of the most nutrient-dense herbs on earth and is known to contain over 90 nutrients and 46 antioxidants.
In Jamaica it is most often used as a daily tonic. Elders would boil the fresh leaves to make tea or cook the young pods like string beans. It’s used to build strength, improve blood circulation, and support bone health. Some even use it to manage anemia and arthritis, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and iron-rich properties.
Globally, Moringa is being studied for its ability to:
•Lower blood sugar levels
•Reduce inflammation
•Support heart health
•Boost immunity
•Combat malnutrition in developing regions
Today, Moringa can be found in many forms: dried leaves, powders, capsules, and oils. But Jamaicans have long known its benefits, using it in soups, stews, and healing teas. You might hear someone say, “A cup a moringa tea good fi de whole body.” And they’re not wrong.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Ginger has long been a staple in Jamaican kitchens and medicine cabinets alike. Traditionally used to settle the stomach or chase away a cold, it’s now proven to help reduce inflammation, nausea, and muscle pain. Studies show it can ease menstrual pain and aid digestion, especially after meals.
It’s no wonder ginger is found in everything from Jamaican bush teas to roots tonics. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties make it a must-have during flu season—and it’s delicious when brewed with honey and lime.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
Though not native to Jamaica, turmeric has made its way into bush medicine for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Its active compound, curcumin, has been studied extensively for helping manage arthritis, joint pain, and even symptoms of depression.
In Jamaican homes, turmeric is often grated fresh or used as a powder in teas or tonics, especially in combination with ginger and black pepper (which helps the body absorb curcumin more effectively). It’s also used topically in pastes to treat skin issues or wounds.
Garlic (Allium sativum)
Garlic isn’t just for flavor—it’s serious medicine. In bush medicine, garlic is boiled into teas to treat colds, cleanse the blood, and lower high blood pressure. Its natural compounds, especially allicin, have antibacterial and antiviral properties that support the immune system.
Modern studies show garlic can help reduce cholesterol, improve heart health, and may even support the body in fighting infections. Some even wear garlic cloves on strings around their necks as an old-time remedy—or superstition—to “ward off evil spirits.”
Modern Meets Traditional: A Powerful Blend
The synergy between traditional bush medicine and modern science is undeniable. What was once seen as “bush remedy” is now part of the global wellness conversation. In fact, Jamaican herbs and roots are being packaged and sold as teas, capsules, and oils all over the world—often at high prices.
That’s why preserving this knowledge is so important. It reminds us that healing can be found in the very soil beneath our feet—and sometimes, the answers we seek are growing in our own backyard
Why This Series Matters Now
In today’s fast-paced world, many people are rediscovering the value of natural health. Global interest in herbal remedies is growing, especially as modern medicine begins to explore and validate what traditional healers have known all along.
Yet, in Jamaica, much of this knowledge is fading. Our elders are aging, and many of the younger generation are more familiar with Panadol than soursop leaves. This series is a way of documenting, preserving, and honoring the healing traditions of our ancestors—while also educating a new audience on how bush medicine can complement modern wellness.
This is not about replacing your doctor. It’s about reconnecting with the land, honoring our roots, and empowering ourselves with knowledge that has stood the test of time.

Beyond the Herbs: A Spiritual and Communal Practice
Bush medicine isn’t just about what you drink—it’s about how you live. It encourages a closer relationship with nature, with your own body, and with the wisdom of your elders. In the countryside, a bush bath isn’t just for cleansing the skin—it’s for spiritual protection. A cup of tea isn’t just for a cold—it’s comfort, tradition, and care passed down in a cup.
Many plants are also used in Jamaican spiritual practices like revivalism and Pocomania, where they are believed to cleanse negative energy, protect against harm, or open pathways to healing.
Bush medicine represents a holistic way of living, where healing includes mind, body, and spirit.
Wisdom from the Elders: A Conversation Rooted in Healing
To truly understand bush medicine, you have to hear it from those who’ve lived it. The knowledge passed down through generations carries not only remedies but rhythm—an ancestral poetry grounded in observation, survival, and love.
I recently sat down with Miss Doreen, a 78-year-old herbalist from rural St. Mary, who’s been using bush medicine since she was a child.
“Mi mother neva did have no doctor money, so bush a wi doctor,” she laughed, rocking slowly in her wooden chair.
“If yuh belly hurt, she boil guava leaf. Fever? Fever grass and sweet bush. And if yuh feeling low, she rub yuh down wid nutmeg and oil and pray.”
Miss Doreen keeps an herb garden that wraps around the back of her house like a wild tapestry. Every plant has a name, a purpose, and a story.
She led me to a tall, sweet-smelling plant with wide leaves.
“Dis a leaf of life. Yuh can bruk a leaf, and it grow again. Same like we—Jamaicans strong. We get bruk, but we grow back.”
When I asked what herb she uses most these days, she smiled and said:
“Dog Blood Bush—cause plenty young woman come to mi with womb troubles. I boil it fi dem, and dem come back sayin’ dey get dem period regular now. Some even get pregnant after tryin’ for years.”
Her final words to me were simple, but they stayed with me:
“God put di healing inna di earth. We just haffi learn how fi use it.
A Sensory Walk Through Jamaica’s Healing Garden
If you’ve ever stepped barefoot through a Jamaican yard after a morning rain, you’ve felt the magic—earth rich with scent, dew clinging to leaves, the soft hush of nature speaking in green.
Bush medicine begins there.
Walk with me.
Cerasee vines climb fences like little rebels, twisting and curling with tiny jagged leaves and occasional yellow flowers. Touch them and your fingers smell faintly bitter—an omen of the taste to come. Boiled into tea, cerasee grips your tongue with an earthy intensity, like the land itself is trying to purge you clean.
Fever grass, or lemongrass, stands tall and elegant, its blades waving in the wind like an old-time dancer. When crushed between your palms, it releases a sweet citrus fragrance—soft and refreshing. Brewed in tea, it comforts you like an old friend who always knows when you’re feeling off.
Leaf of life feels thick and rubbery, as if it’s storing water for a dry day. Snap one leaf off and rest it on damp soil, and in a week, you’ll see roots sprouting. It’s more than a plant—it’s a symbol of rebirth. The tea made from it is mellow and soothing, perfect for coughs and congestion.
Soursop leaves are long, soft, and deep green, with a smell that’s slightly nutty when crushed. The tea, though mild, is like a warm hug for the nervous system, easing tension from the mind and helping sleep arrive without struggle.
Dog blood bush grows bushy and humble, with red stems and small leaves. It smells a bit like fresh earth and wild grass. Boiled for womb cleansing or steeped in spiritual baths, it is sacred to women across generations—whispered about, respected, relied upon.
Even the roots have character. Strong back tastes like strength—dark, earthy, slightly sweet, and unapologetically masculine. Medina, tangled and wiry, gives off a sharp scent when boiled. You can feel it working before you even finish the cup.
These aren’t just plants. They’re personalities. Healers. Teachers.
And they’re all around us—if only we remember how to look.
Safety, Respect, and the Need for Balance
While bush medicine has helped many, it’s important to use it wisely. Natural doesn’t always mean safe, especially when herbs are mixed or used excessively. Pregnant women, people on medications, and those with chronic conditions should always consult a healthcare professional before using herbal remedies.
This series will always emphasize caution, education, and respect for the power of nature.
Reclaiming Our Roots
This project is deeply personal. For many Jamaicans—especially those who grew up in rural communities—bush medicine was part of our upbringing. Some memories may include being forced to drink bitter teas, or rubbing “green bush” on a scrape. For others, these remedies were life-saving when access to doctors or medicine was limited. I am a strong believer in natural remedies for healing and have many prescriptions tucked away in places I have forgotten. Usually my visit to the doctor is followed by frenzied research to find alternatives to the prescribed medications that often have warnings of severe side effects.
As I explore this topic, I’m also on a journey—reconnecting with the healing wisdom of our land, and sharing it with a world that’s ready to listen.

Nurture these existing connections by reaching out, scheduling regular catch-ups, and showing genuine interest in their lives. Sometimes, the most incredible support can come from those who have been by your side all along.
Share your aspirations, concerns, and joys with them, and reciprocate by being there for them in return. Building a strong support network often begins with the seeds of friendship that have already been planted.
How I Built a Support Network in Merida, Mexico
Let me tell you a story about how I found myself in Merida, Mexico, with no groups for women over fifty. But hey, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, right? So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and started a WhatsApp group called “Fifty Finers.”
It started with women over fifty, but we soon welcomed ladies in their sixties, seventies, and beyond! We meet at least once a month, sharing laughter, and stories, and forming connections that have transformed our lives.
Creating Connections in the WhatsApp Group
Our WhatsApp group, “Fifty Finers,” has become a lifeline for many of us. We chat about everything under the sun. Daily adventures, how to move to Merida Mexico, advice on living in Merida Mexico, and even the occasional venting session.
It’s like having a bunch of amazing friends just a message away. Some of us have even formed smaller sub-groups based on shared interests. These sub-groups give us a chance to make deeper connections and bond over our passions.
Exploring Facebook Groups for Your Needs
In addition to our WhatsApp group, I also joined various Facebook groups catering to people moving to Merida Mexico. There’s a wonderful sense of community in these online spaces.
One group that has been very valuable is “The Brothas and Sistas.” It’s a vibrant community where black people come together, offering advice, support, and sharing their experiences.
Beyond that, there are countless other multicultural groups focused on hobbies, activities, and interests. From walking and skating to poetry and painting you name it, and there’s a group for it!
Forming Local Groups Around Shared Interests
If you’re looking to build a support network in your area, one fantastic suggestion is to form groups around activities you enjoy.
Whether it’s hiking, knitting, painting, or book clubs. There’s a high chance that other like-minded individuals in your community are eager to connect too.
Start by reaching out to local organizations, and community centers, or even posting flyers at your favorite coffee shop. You’ll be surprised at how fast you gather a group of amazing women who share your passions. Many are looking for connections just like you.
So, my dear friends, don’t be afraid to take the initiative and create the support network you’ve been craving. Start with a WhatsApp group, explore online communities, and form local groups around your interests.
Embrace the power of connection, laughter, and shared experiences. Trust me, the journey is even sweeter when you have a tribe by your side!
Remember, building a support network takes time and effort, but the rewards are immeasurable. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who understand, support, and uplift you is a priceless gift. So, take a leap of faith, step into communities that resonate with you, and open your heart to new connections. Your tribe is out there, waiting to celebrate the journey of life over 50 with you!

The History of Negril
Negril’s history is as vibrant as its breathtaking beaches. Before it became the laid-back paradise it is today, Negril was home to Taino people, the island’s first known inhabitants. The Tainos were expert fishermen and farmers, living in harmony with Jamaica’s lush landscape. When the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, Negril—then known as Negrillo, meaning “little black” in Spanish—remained a quiet, undeveloped area.
By the 1600s, the British had taken control of Jamaica, and Negril became a pirate hideout. Its secluded coves and thick vegetation provided perfect cover for those seeking refuge from the law. Fast forward to the 20th century, Negril remained largely untouched until the 1960s and 70s, when backpackers and free-spirited travelers discovered its stunning beaches, clear waters, and laid-back vibe.
Today, Negril is a top tourist destination, known for its seven-mile stretch of pristine beach, crystal-clear waters, and world-famous Rick’s Café, where daredevils leap from towering cliffs into the Caribbean Sea. But beyond the tourist hotspots, Negril offers rich cultural experiences, historical treasures, and off-the-beaten-track adventures.

The Culture and History of Negril, Jamaica
Negril, a jewel of Jamaica’s western coast, is more than just a tropical paradise with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. It’s a place where vibrant culture and rich history blend seamlessly, creating a destination that offers both relaxation and an authentic connection to Jamaican heritage.
A Historical Overview of Negril
The name “Negril” is believed to be derived from the Spanish term “Negrillo,” meaning “little black ones,” possibly a reference to the black cliffs along its coastline. The area was first inhabited by the Taino people, Jamaica’s indigenous population, who lived in harmony with nature and left behind a legacy of tools, carvings, and petroglyphs.
When the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, they used Negril’s rugged coastline and hidden caves for shipping and defense. By the 17th century, British colonization transformed the area, and Negril became known for its role in agriculture, particularly sugarcane production. During the era of slavery, enslaved Africans brought to Jamaica contributed to the island’s rich cultural tapestry, blending their languages, music, and traditions into what we now recognize as Jamaican culture.
Negril remained a quiet fishing village until the 20th century, when it began attracting visitors drawn by its natural beauty. The 1960s and 1970s saw the rise of Negril as a hotspot for counterculture movements, as hippies and adventurers flocked to its unspoiled beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Today, Negril is celebrated not only for its natural wonders but also for its deep cultural roots and history.
The Vibrant Culture of Negril
The culture of Negril reflects the heart and soul of Jamaica. It’s a vibrant mix of traditions, music, cuisine, and art, all shaped by the island’s African, European, and indigenous influences.
Music and Dance

Negril is home to live performances and beachside jams, where you can hear legendary artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Burning Spear echoing through the air. Venues like Alfred’s Ocean Palace and events like the annual Negril Reggae Festival keep the music alive, inviting visitors to experience Jamaica’s rhythm firsthand.
Cuisine
Negril’s culinary scene is a celebration of Jamaica’s bold flavors. Jerk chicken, curried goat, ackee and saltfish, and ital cuisine (Rastafarian-inspired vegetarian dishes) are staples of the region. Dining at local spots like Murphy’s West End or enjoying a beachfront meal introduces visitors to the rich and spicy tastes that define Jamaican food culture.

Tours and Relocation Services
My beautiful island of Jamaica has a vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality yet the question remains is it safe to visit Jamaica? For as long as I have been alive, all 61 years and well before, we have been a coveted destination for travelers.
They all come seeking an unforgettable vacation experience, the island vibe and stunning beaches. However, amidst its allure, concerns about safety have loomed large, particularly with the issuance of travel advisories by the US Department of State.
These advisories, laden with warnings about crime and security risks, have cast a shadow over Jamaica’s reputation as a safe haven for tourists and potential expatriates. As a Jamaican living here, I will admit to having been touched and made uncomfortable by the high level of crime. I have even sought refuge in my second home country Merida Mexico.
While the high level of crime does pose some safety concerns, just like in many countries. People continue to visit and relocate to the Island of Jamaica in relative safety.
Is it Safe to Visit Jamaica?
Jamaica’s allure as a tourist destination often finds itself juxtaposed against the backdrop of cautionary advisories issued by the US Department of State. These warnings, intended to inform American citizens of potential risks abroad, paint a picture of Jamaica colored by concerns over crime and security. At the heart of these advisories lie statistics reflecting certain crime rates within Jamaica. They highlight incidents such as theft, assault, and in some cases, more serious crimes.
Let’s take a look at the dichotomy between the US safety warnings and the realities of safety in Jamaica. I would like to unravel the narrative surrounding safety concerns and shed light on the true nature of visiting or relocating to my Caribbean paradise. Despite the cautionary tones of these advisories, I assure you that our island of Jamaica offers safe and enriching experiences for those of you who wish to venture to its shores.
Understanding US Safety Warnings
While these figures may seem alarming at first glance, it’s crucial to contextualize them within the broader landscape of Jamaica’s tourism industry. Crime tends to be concentrated in specific areas and often involves elements of interpersonal disputes or localized issues.
Rarely do we hear reports of random acts of violence targeting tourists indiscriminately. Moreover, the scope of these advisories sometimes extends beyond the typical concerns related to vacationing. For instance, warnings may caution against certain areas or activities that are more prone to criminal activity. While such information can be valuable for travelers, it’s essential to balance these warnings with a nuanced understanding of the overall safety situation in Jamaica.
It’s also worth noting that while the US Department of State provides valuable guidance for American citizens traveling abroad, its advisories may not always align with assessments made by other countries or international organizations. Therefore, it’s advisable to seek multiple sources of information when evaluating the safety of a destination. US safety warnings serve a vital role in promoting traveler safety. They should not however overshadow the myriad positive experiences awaiting visitors to Jamaica.
The Reality of Safety in Jamaica
Despite the warnings and concerns raised by the US Department of State, it’s essential to examine the actual safety conditions experienced by tourists and residents alike in Jamaica. Tourists visit Jamaica every day. You see them roaming the streets of major tourist destinations mingling with the people they meet.
Many have had such a great experience they become seasoned visitors with thousands choosing to relocate to Jamaica. They integrate naturally into the community living well here because of the strength of their currency against the constantly devaluing Jamaican dollars. The warmth and hospitality of the people welcomes them with open arms and several that I personally know go on to opening various businesses.
To gain insight into the safety landscape of Jamaica, let’s take a look at crime statistics and trends. While certain areas may indeed experience higher crime rates, it’s important to note that these figures often reflect localized issues rather than pervasive dangers across the entire country.
Tourist-centric areas and resorts typically have robust security measures in place to ensure the safety of visitors. Many tourists attest to feeling safe and welcomed during their stay, emphasizing the warmth and hospitality of the Jamaican people.
Safe Areas to Explore:
Jamaica boasts diverse regions, each with its own charm and character. While some areas may have higher crime rates, others are known for their safety and tranquility. Places like Portland, Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios are popular tourist destinations. They provide a well-developed tourism infrastructure and enhanced security measures. These areas typically offer safe accommodations, reputable tour operators, and bustling yet secure nightlife options.
Recommended Activities:
From lounging on pristine beaches to exploring lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls, Jamaica offers a plethora of activities for travelers of all interests.
These include:

Partaking in cultural experiences such as reggae music concerts, culinary tours, and art exhibitions allows visitors to immerse themselves in Jamaica’s rich heritage while enjoying safe and memorable encounters.

Safety Precautions for Travelers:
While exploring Jamaica’s treasures, it’s essential for travelers to prioritize their safety by taking precautionary measures. These may include:
Stay Informed

Secure Accommodations:
Choose accommodations with secure facilities and reputable reviews preferably located in well-touristed areas.

By following these precautions and exercising commonsense travelers can minimize safety concerns and enjoy the beauty and hospitality that Jamaica has to offer.
Promoting Responsible Tourism
In wrapping up, let’s tackle the big question: “Is it safe to visit Jamaica?” It’s not a simple yes or no, but rather a mix of factors. We’ve learned that being a responsible tourist is key to making Jamaica safer and more sustainable. That means supporting local businesses, respecting local customs, and truly engaging with the people and communities you visit.
Also, spreading the word about what Jamaica is really like in terms of safety helps travelers make smarter choices. When we all know the facts, we can travel more responsibly and make sure our trips have a positive impact.

How to Set Goals After 50
Setting goals is important at any age, but it becomes even more crucial as we age. By (SMART) goals, older adults can stay motivated. They are more focused, and productive.
To set effective goals, it’s important to follow the SMART framework. Here’s how to do it:
Specific
Define what you want to achieve. The more specific your goal, the easier it will be to create a plan to achieve it. Instead of setting a vague goal like “get healthier,” set a specific goal like “lose 10 pounds.”
Measurable
Create a way to measure your progress. This will help you track your progress and stay motivated. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds, you can measure your progress by tracking your weight.
Achievable
Make sure your goal is realistic and achievable. Setting a goal that is too difficult or unrealistic can be discouraging. Instead, set a goal that challenges you but is still attainable.
Relevant
Ensure your goal is relevant to your values and priorities. Setting a goal that is not important to you can lead to a lack of motivation and commitment.
Time-bound
Set a deadline for achieving your goal. This will help you stay focused and committed. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds, set a deadline of 3 months.
Here are some examples of SMART goals that older adults can set for themselves:
1. Exercise
Walking for 30 minutes every day for a month is a great way to improve cardiovascular health. Not only does it benefit the heart, but it can also help reduce stress levels and improve overall mood. Set a specific time of day to go for a walk and make it a habit. Consistency is key to achieving your goals.
2. Read a Book
Reading one book per month can also stimulate the mind and help you learn something new. Choose a book that interests you or challenges your perspective. Take notes while reading to retain the information better.
3. Volunteer
Volunteering at a local charity for 10 hours per month can give back to the community and promote social connections. It can also provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
4. Do a Project
Completing a home renovation project within 6 months can improve your living space and promote a sense of accomplishment. Start with a specific goal, such as painting a room or organizing a closet, and work towards completing it within the timeframe.
5. Get Help
Consider seeking help through therapy or counseling. It’s important to take care of your mental health and work through any challenges or obstacles that may arise during the goal-setting process. Don’t be afraid to reach out for support.
By setting SMART goals, older adults can stay motivated and focused on achieving their desired outcomes.
Plan and Taking Action
As the saying goes, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Setting goals is important. Without a plan of action, you won’t achieve the.
Break Down Larger Goals
One of the most effective ways to make progress toward a goal is to break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. This not only makes the goal less overwhelming. It provides a clear roadmap towards achieving it.
For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, start by setting smaller goals. Run a mile, then a 5k, and so on.
Stay Organized
This is essential for achieving any goal. Keeping track of progress, deadlines, and tasks can help you stay focused and motivated.
One way to stay organized is to use a planner. Use digital tools like calendars and to-do lists. Using time management strategies like prioritizing tasks and setting deadlines can also be helpful.
Seek Support and Accountability
Having a support system and accountability can be a significant factor in achieving one’s goals. Friends, family, or a coach can provide encouragement, motivation, and feedback.
They can also help keep you accountable and on track toward your goals. Joining a group or finding a mentor with similar goals can also be an effective way to stay motivated and accountable.
Stay Motivated and Focused
As we pursue our goals, it’s common to experience moments of doubt, frustration, or even boredom. It’s important to learn how to maintain motivation and focus even when the going gets tough. Here are some tips for staying motivated and focused on your goals:
Use Visualization and Positive Self-talk
These powerful tools can help you stay motivated. Visualize yourself achieving your goal and focus on the positive aspects of achieving it.
Use positive self-talk to remind yourself of your capabilities and strengths. Avoid negative self-talk or comparing yourself to others, as this can be demotivating.
Overcome Obstacles and Setbacks
These are inevitable when pursuing any goal. It’s important to anticipate potential obstacles and plan for how you will overcome them.
When setbacks occur, try to view them as opportunities to learn and grow. Reframe your mindset from a fixed mindset (“I can’t do this”) to a growth mindset (“I can learn from this and improve”).
Celebrate Small Wins and Milestones
It’s important to celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small it may seem. Celebrating small wins and milestones can provide a sense of motivation.
It offers encouragement to continue working towards your larger goal. It’s important to acknowledge your hard work and accomplishments, even if they’re not yet the ultimate goal.
By following these tips, you can stay motivated and focused on achieving your goals, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks. Remember to take things one step at a time, visualize your success, overcome obstacles with a growth mindset, and celebrate your progress along the way.
Perseverance and Personal Growth
As we age, it’s important to cultivate a mindset of perseverance and resilience in pursuit of our goals. This means being able to bounce back from setbacks and failures. We must keep moving forward in the face of challenges.
Setbacks and failures are not signs of defeat, but rather opportunities for personal growth and learning. It’s important to view them as such. Use them as fuel to continue working towards our goals.
This requires a willingness to learn from mistakes. Learn to make adjustments and course corrections as needed.
Reflection is key to maintaining perseverance and personal growth. By assessing our progress and taking note of what’s working and what’s not, we can adjust our goals and strategies. This helps us stay on track and continue making progress toward our desired outcome.
Ultimately, the ability to persevere and grow personally is what sets successful goal-setters apart. By developing this mindset, we can continue to achieve our goals and lead fulfilling lives well into our golden years.
