Cultivate Existing Relationships

Building a support network doesn’t always mean starting from scratch. Take a moment to reflect on the relationships you already have. These include family members, friends, colleagues, or neighbors.

Nurture these existing connections by reaching out, scheduling regular catch-ups, and showing genuine interest in their lives. Sometimes, the most incredible support can come from those who have been by your side all along.

Share your aspirations, concerns, and joys with them, and reciprocate by being there for them in return. Building a strong support network often begins with the seeds of friendship that have already been planted.

How I Built a Support Network in Merida, Mexico

Let me tell you a story about how I found myself in Merida, Mexico, with no groups for women over fifty. But hey, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, right? So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and started a WhatsApp group called “Fifty Finers.”

It started with women over fifty, but we soon welcomed ladies in their sixties, seventies, and beyond! We meet at least once a month, sharing laughter, and stories, and forming connections that have transformed our lives.

Creating Connections in the WhatsApp Group

Our WhatsApp group, “Fifty Finers,” has become a lifeline for many of us. We chat about everything under the sun. Daily adventures, how to move to Merida Mexico, advice on living in Merida Mexico, and even the occasional venting session.

It’s like having a bunch of amazing friends just a message away. Some of us have even formed smaller sub-groups based on shared interests. These sub-groups give us a chance to make deeper connections and bond over our passions.

Exploring Facebook Groups for Your Needs

In addition to our WhatsApp group, I also joined various Facebook groups catering to people moving to Merida Mexico. There’s a wonderful sense of community in these online spaces.

One group that has been very valuable is “The Brothas and Sistas.” It’s a vibrant community where black people come together, offering advice, support, and sharing their experiences.

Beyond that, there are countless other multicultural groups focused on hobbies, activities, and interests. From walking and skating to poetry and painting you name it, and there’s a group for it!

Forming Local Groups Around Shared Interests

If you’re looking to build a support network in your area, one fantastic suggestion is to form groups around activities you enjoy.

Whether it’s hiking, knitting, painting, or book clubs. There’s a high chance that other like-minded individuals in your community are eager to connect too.

Start by reaching out to local organizations, and community centers, or even posting flyers at your favorite coffee shop. You’ll be surprised at how fast you gather a group of amazing women who share your passions.  Many are looking for connections just like you.

So, my dear friends, don’t be afraid to take the initiative and create the support network you’ve been craving. Start with a WhatsApp group, explore online communities, and form local groups around your interests.

Embrace the power of connection, laughter, and shared experiences. Trust me, the journey is even sweeter when you have a tribe by your side!

Remember, building a support network takes time and effort, but the rewards are immeasurable. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who understand, support, and uplift you is a priceless gift. So, take a leap of faith, step into communities that resonate with you, and open your heart to new connections. Your tribe is out there, waiting to celebrate the journey of life over 50 with you!
