A minimalist life can bring you a life of freedom and adventure. I always wanted to go on an adventure but was too busy working and playing in my 20s.
In my 50’s I got tired of feeling bogged down by day-to-day expenses and I wanted to break free and experience something new. So at 59, 3 months shy of sixty I made the decision to sell all my stuff and become a nomad and move to Merida Mexico. And let me tell you, it’s been amazing!
Traveling has allowed me to see things I never would have seen if I had stayed put. Plus, it’s been a great way to meet new people and learn about different cultures.

The Measure of Success
When I was younger, I used to think that having lots of stuff meant that you were successful in life. The more things you had, the better off you were. But as I got older, I realized that this wasn’t true at all.
We all dreamt of growing up and becoming an adult. No one warned us that adulting would be so hard. The bills, the job, the rent…it all adds up. And it was so expensive!
I started to feel like my stuff was weighing me down. I felt like I had to take care of it all and it was just too much for me. So, I decided to get rid of it all and become a nomad.
Covid 19 wiped out my exotic costume business. I lost my job mid covid. My savings got wiped out after living on no income for nearly a year and a half. I was getting desperate. Something had to change.
I Sold It All
It was a turning point. I surveyed my home and saw that I had too much stuff. Too many items were taking up room, gathering dust, and not contributing to my life in any way. So I did what anybody would do in that scenario: I got rid of it all.
I started with the easy stuff- clothes, furniture, kitchenware. But as I got further into it, I began to realize just how much crap I had collected over the years. Boxes of photos, letters from old friends, mementos from trips long forgotten. It was all getting boxed up and sold off piece by piece.
Selling everything I owned was liberating. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. And it made me realize that I didn’t need all that stuff to be happy. I was perfectly content with just a few belongings. It made me feel freer than I ever had before.
Was I Crazy?
I know what you’re thinking. “Why would anyone want to sell all their stuff and become a nomad living a minimalist life?” It’s a valid question, one that I asked myself many times before making the decision.
But for me, it was about finding freedom. Freedom from the constant stress of having to pay bills, freedom from the need to own things, freedom to go wherever I want and do whatever I please.
And yes, there are some challenges that come along with this lifestyle choice, but for me, they outweighed the benefits.

One of the biggest challenges of living as a nomad is supporting yourself financially. Unless you have a lot of money saved up, you’ll likely need to find other ways to make money while on the road. You still need support even while living a minimalist life.
Here are a few options to consider:
1. Find work online.
There are many online opportunities that allow you to work from anywhere in the world. Just be sure to do your research so you don’t end up getting scammed.
2. Start a side hustle.
Use your skills and talents to earn money through freelancing, blogging, or online work.
3. Consider housesitting or pet sitting.
This is a great way to save on accommodation costs while also earning a little extra cash.
4. Work as a digital nomad.
There are many companies that offer positions that can be done remotely. This is an excellent option if you have the necessary skills and experience.
5. Volunteer or work in exchange for food and accommodation.
Sites like WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) connect volunteers with organic farmers who need help with things like planting and harvesting. In exchange for your work, you’ll receive food and lodging.
Make a Plan and Ask For Help
By taking the time to plan things out, you can increase your chances of success. Don’t underestimate the importance of this step!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Change can be difficult, and there’s no shame in admitting that you need some extra support along the way.
Be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your new life! Take things one step at a time and don’t get discouraged if things.
